Industrial Skills Development and Technical and Vocational Education in Developing Countries.

この研究のねらい [English]

About this research
In Africa, thanks to the rapid expansion of access to basic education since the 1990s, nowadays, the enrolment rates have exceeded 90% in most of the countries. Also, since the middle of the 2000s when the export of mineral resources prospered in this continent, economies have grown significantly.
However, the economic growth dependent on resources is difficult to lead to the demands for high value-added products, and a large part of the African workforce still engages in insecure informal sector jobs. This fact indicates that expanded basic education hasn’t contributed enough to secure employment for individuals or establishment of technological basis for manufacture-led economic growth.
What lacks for education to become the site for transmitting knowledge and skills demanded in the society in a true sense? Where do mismatches between the school and the labor market happen? What kind of occupations do school-leavers engage, for what kind of reasons?
To answer these questions, this research team conduct research from multi-dimensional and comprehensive approaches, inviting expertise from various disciplines such as education, economics, psychology, and sociology.

Specific topics worked on under this research project:

◆Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and employment
・Motivations for learning and career paths of formal TVET students.
・Comparative research between skills acquired through apprenticeship
and firm-based training and those through formal education.
・Identification of gap between skills demand from the labor market and
  TVET training.
◆Skills assessment of manufacturing workers
・Development of assessment module on sector-specific vocational skills.
・Exploration of approaches for comprehensive assessment of problem
  solving skills of manufacturing workers.
 ・Combined assessment of cognitive, non-cognitive,and sector-specific
  vocational skills.
・Analysis of TVET curriculum and occupation standard and policy
  proposals based on it.
