Information on the international practical program, ‘Global Practicum'

Global Practicum is the name of the elective action program that GSID aims to introduce for a doctoral course. It is an international program, which focuses more on field research, that supports a practical education approach. It aims to create an opportunity for doctoral students to develop their capacity and disseminate their research findings and was experimentally carried out in 2007 and 2008. This ‘Capacity Development in Research Dissemination’ program has three basic targets, developing the ability to identify research problems from realistic situations, developing creative communication skills, and obtaining practical management competence. In 2009, it will be implemented as a regular part of educational study. To achieve these three targets, we propose the following three types of action programs.

1. International Field Research to identify problems (Capacity Development for the research dissemination)
This program is to develop the ability to take the initiative for international researches concerning his/her research topics. This involves overseas field research to be conducted under the guidance of instructors at universities (which have international academic agreement with Nagoya University, for example) in the country of the respective research. In other words, overseas joint field research to be conducted as a part of a joint international research program that includes instructors from overseas universities. The results will be presented at an international conference or society, and published as a research paper in a foreign language.

2. Development of e-learning contents and international teaching program (Capacity development of education teaching?)
On the basis of their research findings, the students would, for example, have a teaching program in the respective university, which is under an international academic agreement with Nagoya University. In this way, students can familiarize themselves with sharing their knowledge and skills in the educational field, and based on the contents and the methodology, they can create e-learning contents that can be globally promoted.

3. International Internship (Capacity development of practice)
Students engage in an internship in a domestic/foreign international organization, and by acquiring their practical abilities, examine the possibility of applying theoretical knowledge to the actual field. The individual participants’ reports will be combined into one report, and then it will become the educational material for master’s degree students.
